Branches of the army

The Armed Forces of Azerbaijan comprise three service branches, the Special Forces and modern high-tech precision capabilities.

How the army is organised

The Armed Forces of Azerbaijan are led by the Ministry of Defence, and under the Constitution the Commander-in-Chief is the President. The army includes three main service branches, as well as the Special Forces and combat-support units. Other state military formations operate separately.

Core of the army

Land Forces

The largest branch: motor-rifle, tank, missile and artillery units, army aviation and ground-forces air defence. The main striking power on the battlefield.

Sky & air defence

Air Force

Combat and transport aviation, helicopters and air-defence systems that cover the country's skies and support the troops from the air.

The Caspian

Navy

The Caspian fleet headquartered in Baku: patrol and landing ships, boats and marines defending the maritime borders and oil infrastructure.

Elite

Special Forces

Professional commando units trained to the standards of the world's leading armies. They played a notable role in the mountain operations of the Patriotic War.

High technology

Drones & precision weapons

Modern strike and reconnaissance drones and precision-guided weapons that became one of the decisive factors of the 2020 victory and a symbol of the army's technological edge.

Other formations

Besides the army, the country's defence and security are provided by the State Border Service, Internal Troops and the National Guard.
